CamelBak is a well-known company that specializes in the production of hydration products, particularly known for their hydration packs.
The company was founded in 1989 by Michael Eidson, an emergency medical technician competing in the "Hotter 'n Hell 100" bike race in Wichita Falls, Texas. Given the scorching heat and minimal opportunities for water breaks, Eidson filled an IV bag with water, stuck it in a tube sock, and safety-pinned it to the back of his jersey. He then dropped the thin hose over his shoulder, securing it with a clothespin. This contraption allowed him to drink as he pedaled, and the first hydration system was born.
The makeshift device drew the attention of many fellow cyclists, and Eidson seized the opportunity. By 1993, CamelBak Products, LLC had become an official company. The early CamelBak hydration packs used the now-iconic bladder and hose system, allowing hands-free access to water or sports drinks.
Over the years, the company expanded its product range to include a variety of hydration solutions. They introduced new innovations such as the Omega Reservoir, with its wide-mouth opening for easy filling and cleaning, and the Crux Reservoir, which provided 20% more water per sip.
In 2015, CamelBak was acquired by Vista Outdoor Inc., a designer, manufacturer, and marketer of consumer products in the outdoor sports and recreation markets. As of my knowledge cut-off in 2021, CamelBak continues to be a major player in the market, with a commitment to producing high-quality hydration gear for all kinds of outdoor activities.
